Gorge of Mylon – Gerania mountains

Mylon Gorge at Alepochori is one of the closest gorges in Athens. Its exit is only a few meters from the road connecting Kato Alepochori with Mavrolimni. It is a canyon that usually has water from November until after spring. We visited it on October 12, 2012, and it was absolutely dry. It has 14 rappel with twin fuses, with a lower 25 m, and the rest not exceeding 9 m.

To reach the entrance, having left a car at the exit, continue the road to Mavrolimni for about 800m, and go left on the dirt road.

We follow a dirt trail (mostly in the beginning) for about 3.3 km, turning left at each intersection.

As soon as we get there, we follow a rudimentary stream on the left, without any particular path.

Characteristic is a stone building we meet, and we continue our course to the left.

After a few minutes, we reach the first download that is 4m. Once we put our belts we start. Here are a few downsides with a retainer and then a number of slopes.

The gorge in some places is quite narrow and tall and it gives it a wild beauty.

Then the canyon opens a little but series have 8m and 25m downs which for the latter is split at two points so as not to rub the rope.

Next on are the last abbreviations to the exit. After the last rappel the road is only a few meters away.

The gorge certainly deserves a visit especially when it has water.

Further information about the gorge as well as its mapping can be found on the blog of the Loutraki Mountaineering Association:
